Will they make me?

Question

I breastfed my first and it went absolutely terrible and I started getting depressed from latching problems, production etc. I have been firm with my decision to pump this time and use nipple shields if I choose to breastfeed in the end. 
My question is, will the hospital force me to try without a shield? I really don’t want to bother if that’s not what I’ll be doing the moment we leave the hospital. They can be pretty damn persistent sometimes.

Just be bossy, it's your baby. I'm an exclusive pumper and only had one (older male) doctor ask why. I got a little sassy and he didn't ask anymore questions lol

They can’t force you Hun, they just advise you to try as every baby is different. From my own experience breastfeeding my youngest son he didn’t latch properly at all and it hurt me every time after 4wks I gave up on breastfeeding.. with our 3rd she’s been a dream had no problems at all I’m 6months into our breastfeeding journey.. and my 1st I stopped producing milk after 3wks so you can see not every baby the same even your own body changes like mine did from my 1st. 😊

My hospital gave you any choice on how to feed...hopefully yours does also. I wanted to breastfeed but baby had a itty bity tiny mouth and had a hard time latching so they gave me a nipple shield and taught us how to supplement feed until the latch got stronger. Do what feels best for you..if they don't agree too bad for them. Mama kbows best in most instances. As long as your baby gets fed, they should be happy in the long run. Good luck!!

They can’t make you. I know they can be persistent, and it’s probably worth trying because every baby is different, but the hospital I went to actually encouraged me trying a nipple shield with my first because he had a tongue tie and it wasn’t going well without it.
You are well within your rights to be forceful and tell them to back off if they are trying to push you to do something you don’t want. It’s your body and your baby, not theirs

Was it the baby that had latching issues or was it your nipples? I’ve breastfed both of my kids. My first we had issues I had flat nipples and she had a tongue or lip tie. My son, is a breastfeeding champ. My nipples weren’t and issue and he had no ties. I’d encourage you to give it a shot, every baby and nursing experience is different.

They can’t force you to do anything. You bring a shield if you want and you put it there to try with baby. No body can force you to breastfeed any way other then yours.

The can’t force you to do anything but they will harass you about it. They did that to me, just stick to your guns and let them know what YOU have decided!

They can’t, and won’t, force you. 
They might recommend speaking to the lactation consultant, which is always great! It’s always good to have a lil refresh from the LC. 
Also, just because it didn’t go well with the first doesn’t mean you’ll automatically have the same obstacles. 
Just be open minded to help and you’ll do great whichever method you choose to feed your baby!
