How much would you expect an engagement ring to cost?

My boyfriend, some friends and I were talking about someone who proposed with a ring she didn’t like so he offered to exchange it. But in order to get the full exchange for the ring he has to spend what the ring is worth on top of that...this guy spent 8k on a ring she didn’t like and wants to spend another 8k on another ring she does like. My immediate reaction was “holy shit that’s insane” but my boyfriend didn’t seem surprised at how much they spent.

Ya no thank you. There is so much more to life than some stupidly expensive ring.  I had a ring for about a week. Someone stole it. It was a family heirloom. I got a fake for about $25 to wear.
