Wash routine with hard water?

I am cloth diapering my twins. Currently they’re 5 months old (3 months adjusted) and I’m washing about 16 diapers every other day. (That could be off as I haven’t counted ) I just discovered that we have hard water and I’m afraid it’s effecting how clean the diapers are getting. What can I do to fix this? Also is it ok for me to be washing 16 diapers at once together? Could that also effect how well they’re being cleaned? I currently use ALL FREE AND CLEAR detergent. Any advice is welcome!

I use tide free and clear powder in the soap dispenser and a 1/2 cup of borax in the drum with the diapers. Also the number of diapers depends on the size of your machine and what kind on diapers you use. They need a bit of room to tumble around so I think it’s up to about 3/4 full.

First of all the All F&C is going to cause repelling unless you’re using powder. You’ll need to add water softener  depending on your hardness number. When you tested your water what was the number? How much softener added is dependent on that number and what detergent you ultimately choose. 
How many washes have you washed using the bad detergent and in hard water?

I’ve heard the free and clear doesn’t clean them very well. The fluff love university has some good info. We also have hard water so we add 1/2 cup of borax to every cycle. For detergent we use arm and hammer with oxiclean.

I just realized I have hard water too. I’ve been using Charlie’s soap for my detergent and just the other day bought Charlie’s soap booster- it’s designed to soften water for those who have hard water. It had great reviews on Amazon, many from women who cloth diaper. Waiting for it in the mail now!
