Is this normal?

My baby is 5 weeks 5 days and he just seems so uncomfortable! He grunts and gets red in the face like he’s pushing but nothing happens. This morning he had a huge poop and he’s had very little “skid mark” type poops today. He’s had wet diapers. 
I’m just concerned about how he pushes and pushes and nothing happens but he seems so uncomfortable! Is this normal for this age?

I don't know if it's normal, but we are going through the same here. And we went to the hospital and she's perfectly fine and healthy. And her poop shows no signs of constipation when there finally is some.
So as far as we know, there isnt anything to do. I guess it must be normal? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Exact same thing here! Dr said he’s just 5 weeks old and hopefully it’ll pass soon 🤷🏼‍♀️

My 3 week old does this too. I got the go ahead to give him gripe water and gas drops to help. It seems to help relieve some of his trouble

My 7 week old son does the same thing. Sometimes I think it’s just him being uncomfortable because he has gas. Dr said he had a mild form of reflux. So I try to rub his belly clock wise, rub the left side of his belly, then do a backwards “L” shape from the top of his belly to the right side, then  do an upside down “u” just above his belly button. After that at the top of his belly button I move my thumbs in outward motion. It’s a type of massage. It’s helped him pass some gas also I’ve seen it work to help the bowels.

Same thing here!! For my son it just depends on the day. Some days there isn’t any straining with poops, other days it’s all day long. His poops are always fine according to color and texture. Our pediatrician says it could be that he just “forgets” how to poop. Babies have a hard time pushing with their abdomen and also relaxing their sphincter muscles at the same time. So while they’re trying to poop their hardest, they’re actually holding it in.

Is this normal?
