Why do they check your cervix dilation and effacement?

If it really doesn’t tell when you’re going to go into labor, why do they check it every week?

They check it to see where you're at.
Some women can be a 5 and not even know it, while others can be a 1 and by late that night be a 7 .
It gives them an idea how you're progressing. 
I stayed at 1 every check,my doctor said he didnt think I was a good candidate for vaginal labor.
He was correct, after  14 hours of labor i was only a 2 and my son was not in the birth canal and had a csection

How quick or slow those numbers progress can tell you how you are progressing. Although you are right, sometimes you can stay stuck at a certain number for a while so it feels like it doesn't do any good to know. The numbers as part of bishop score can indicate how quick an induction might work too.

I only got it at 42 week checked. I was less them one cm haha. But gave birth that night.
