Having your Cervix Checked?

Hi ladies! I’ve recently been seeing that a lot of women decline having their cervix checked and state it isn’t necessary until they’re in labor...can anyone explain why and why they wouldn’t allow this to be done? I’m so clueless

It's generally unnecessary because it isn't an indication of impending labor.  You can go from 1cm to active labor in a matter of hours or you can be 1cm for weeks beforehand.  On the flip side, some woman can be 3-4cms and still not go into labor for some time.  It can cause false hope or unnecessary discouragement.  It's also uncomfortable and even downright painful.

It can cause cramping or bleeding which leads to unnecessary anxiety over nothing.  It really gives no indication when you’ll go into labor.  My midwives won’t check unless you go over a week past your due date and then they only check to see if you might be favorable to a natural induction.

It's just unnecessary, how dilated you are has no indication of when you'll go into labor unless you're in active labor. Some women walk around 1-4cm dilated for weeks before they actually go into labor, others have no dilation until labor starts. It can also potentially introduce infection, as well as causing unnecessary stress to mom for either being dilated but not going into labor or not being dilated at all. A lot of doctors don't even do cervical checks anymore.

I dunno about everyone else but they ONLY checked my cervix when I was in labor and it hurt soooo bad

I agree with what the other ladies have said :) I don’t get checked till after 40weeks. With my daughter I was barely 1cm, at my 41 week appt I was just a bit more- enough for a sweep. Contractions started about 12 hrs later. I labored at home till they were 3 min apart. Got to the hospital at noon - was 3 cm - had my daughter at 3pm. I did most of my dilating last in the last 3 hrs of my 14hr labor. I’ve heard that some women walk around for weeks at 3 or 4 cm- especially if they had already given birth before.

Gosh it hurts SOOO bad. I can honestly say the only time I screamed during my labor was when they were checking my cervix. I would take contractions over that 100% 😖😖😖
