Exploitation vs Representation (read description)

I was just watching TLC and scrolling through IG. I saw that little women Atlanta is trending and has been a trending topic for quite some time now. A lot of different social outlets, influencers, tv hosts etc have been posting bits of the cast. Nothing too crazy. I don’t have an issue with it.

But it did raise a question for me. Right now inclusivity is “trendy”. At least that’s how it seems. Companies are banking off wide shade ranges, inclusive brand launches and ambassadors , etc. None of this seems to be an issue at face value. But I’m still just a bit skeptical of the inevitable question “why now?” Or “why all of a sudden is this important?”

On one hand it’s so amazing and empowering to see different body types, genders, different communities coming together and gaining a wider representation. On the other hand it kinda feels disingenuous almost as if companies are seeing the inclusivity as a marketing campaign rather than genuinely wanting to give/create opportunity.

Maybe it’s just me, which is why I’m here asking. Do you all feel inclusivity within brands is more exploitive or do you feel companies genuinely want to have more representation?
