Failed Induction birth story
I was 38 weeks 4 days and was scheduled for an induction on Wednesday 29 May 2019 at 12pm. However, I woke up at 6.30am that day to clear fluid dripping down my thighs which continued to drip. I was told to come in earlier since it may have been my waters that have been broken. I get to the hospital and they confirm that my waters have been broken and I am 1cm dilated at around 9.30am. Since I was getting induced and my water broke, I just skipped the gel part and was put on the oxytocin drip from 11am. They increased the dosage slowly and I started getting mild to intense contractions six in 10 minutes.
I get another vaginal examination at around 2pm and I am still at 1cm. The drip got increased very high but contractions still not regular enough and just too many. I survived through them up until 6pm where another vaginal examination was done. More fluid gushed out but there is no progress, im still at 1cm. At 7pm because of no progression I get another doctor to come and check me and to try insert a baby heart monitor on the baby's head, but was unable too because it hurt too bad and was just too difficult to reach. The doctor advised that I will be in this pain for more than 6 hours and recommended that I think about taking an epidural. I wanted to go natural, but with no progress in 12 hours and stuck at 1cm I opted for the epidural at 8pm.
Around 9pm the midwife tries to attach a baby monitor on the baby's head but was not able too because still no progress and cervix is way too high. The drip was increased again. And the doctors find it very unusual that I haven't even progressed at least another cm.
With 13 hours in and my waters broken with not much left, and still 1cm dilated I am now under a time limit. The doctor came and told me if I hit the 18 hour mark and find out there is no progress a C-section is advised due to the increase risk of further waiting. Not what I liked to here but nothing seems to be working and the doctors don't know why I am not progressing.
After 17 hours on the drip I was checked twice vaginally and unfortunately I was still at 1cm! At around 3am I get doctors come and advise me a C-section will be needed and is the only option left due to an induction failure. I opted for the c-section because me waiting even more will be more of a risk for the baby and myself. Because the drip was increased in high dosages continuing to wait would cause me more internal bleeding and tiring out my uterus. Since 11am on Wednesday to Thursday at 3am I should have at least delivered by now or be dilated a certain amount. But the baby has not moved at all.
In the end this was my only option left, not what I expected but there is no other way.
I go into the theatre and get prepped for the C-section at 4am and finally give birth to this cheeky baby girl Elena Demiana at 4.30 am on 30 May 2019. Spent until 5.30am cleaning and stitching me up. I was induced early because the baby was measuring small and decreased in weight (just below the 10th percentile). But, she ended up being 2.7kg and 54cm and healthy.
Not the birth I wanted as a FTM but im happy that she's healthy. Now I just got to recover 🤷🏽♀️
