So I had sex for the first time with my boyfriend last night and I know you’re supposed to bleed but how much? Its been 8 hours later and I’m still bleeding pretty intensively and I’m a little concerned. It’s a lot more blood than I normally see on my period so did I tear something?

Firstly, it’s a common misconception that you’re ‘supposed to bleed’ after your first time. You can bleed, but it doesn’t always happen and it can be avoided. The reason women bleed is usually because their hymen is split, which is a tiny bit of skin at the opening of your vagina. If you’re turned on enough & wet enough, and he’s being gentle, it probably won’t split. It can also split from thugs like sports, riding a horse etc. This is usually only a small amount of blood, since the piece of skin is so thin.
Another reason you may be bleeding is if he was hitting your cervix, if he was you probably would’ve felt pain deep in your stomach while he was inside of you.
He also could have scratched you inside if he used fingers.
A lot of blood, even more than your usual period is probably worth talking to a doctor over just in case.

Thank you all so much for commenting! The bleeding stopped a couple hours after I posted this. Now I’m just sore around the area and inside — I’m sure thats also normal (I hope).

Try looking in a mirror & see if you can see the source of the bleeding...
It could be a rip or it could just be a period.
If you're worried, please call 111 (if you're in the UK) and get some advice on what you should do xx

That’s not normal, my first time i bled pretty intense but only directly after and it stopped within 10 minutes. 
You may have started your period though ( periods can change after sex ), so if you were close to your cycle, the sex may have just brought it early.

You dont have anything to worry about.. he broke your hymen and so that's why.. he has started ur period early.. u might bleed heavy for the next couple of days and then after that less so.. also dont be surprised if u bleed the second time u have sex as that is what happened to me also.. it gets better after the 3rd time.
