I fucking hate this with a passion lol I take shows too seriously.
They were both wrong, Rachel said they were on a "break" and she decided he should guess what "a break" meant to her and what her terms were, like he was some kind of mind reader psych. She should have sat him down and discussed what a break meant to her. 
He on the other hand was too rushed to go to sleep with someone else the night after the fact before finding out what a break actually meant to her and shouldn't have gone through all the trouble to make sure Rachel didn't find out. Own up to your mistakes man. You don't need to tell her the copying machine girl was in the apartment when Rachel got there, but be honest about sleeping with someone else instead of trying to hide it sooo poorly.
If maybe they both assumed they were both faulty it would work out.
