Tips for tanning outside?

I'm trying to get tanner over this summer but some reason it takes so long for me to get the slightest tan and I don't usually tan very easily unless it's about 80 degrees and above outside. I don't burn because I'm Italian and very naturally kind of dark, but not too too dark. So anyone have any tips for getting tanner? I live in New Jersey on the shore and it's always sunny and hot but... advice???
