How many swimming lessons do I need to learn how to swim?

I’m so excited to learn how to swim at 28. I’m using a program at LA fitness for 50$ per hr lesson, once a week.. I’m wondering if that’s really enough to learn :( ... I decided maybe I can do 3 classes per month and maybe practice on my own.

Until you are comfortable enough to swim in the deep end and tread water for at least 2 minutes.

My dad used to compete in national swimming competitions as a boy and teen and then after his army service he did some more competition before becoming an engineer.
To this day he still does life-guarding and still gives swimming lessons for school groups and coaches adult classes like the local masters, also competes in the galas sometimes - and most of the time wins (he’s 60!) in his spare time.
As you can imagine, I was taught to swim by my dad when I was tiny! I’m now nearly 31. My husband wasn’t a very confident swimmer but I helped him with some things I remembered.
Float on your back - just float and notice how you don’t have to work to stay there
Doing breast stroke, go slowly, hold your belly in and breathe in when you bring your hands in and breath out when you push you hands out
Have a float in your hands and just do some laps just kicking
On your back, have a float (8 shaped) between your ankles and just use your arms 
If you’re really uncomfortable in the water, like my husband was, have someone gently hold you up from under your belly while you swim around breast-stroke for a while. 
After a couple of times with him, I had him treading water, sitting on the bottom of the pool waving 🤣 and retrieving one of those sinking dolphin toys from the deep end (something else my dad used to teach me - helps with holding breath/ stamina, movement and being comfortable underwater)

I mean they teach the basics and you can definitely always practice on your own when comfortable enough to! I think that the 3 a month sounds like a great start and if you need more, they are always there!

My brother at 12 and me at 22 learned in our 2 week class. I think it was like 4-6 sessions and we came out feeling confident. A decade later neither of us gabe drowned :-P... but no seriously, both of us are good swimmers and don't feel like we were left out of that normal childhood experience.

Commenting so I can follow post. I’m 27 and never really learned to swim... my bf tried to teach me but only twice and I didn’t make much progress (we don’t go to the pool often)

I think it’s cool you’re doing this. I think every person is going to be different but practicing as much as possible will make all the difference. Hell, you’re motivating my old ass to get out there and finally learn too.
