What does popularity ranking actually mean

Question

and how popular is Luna? I know the top #100 means a name is popular but how popular? If a name is ranked #50 will there be three other girls in her class with the name or is that only if it’s in the top ten? Or what about #20? 
Wondering because my hubby loves the name Luna, but I’m worried it’s too popular. I don’t need a unique name no one else would have... but would like to avoid multiples in the same grade.

She may have another Luna in her whole elementary school, but she's unlikely to have another Luna in her classes.

I wouldnt worry about it. Now adays so many people use such unique names, that even if a name is in the top 10 names, those names are still really rare. Lol!

I liked Luna also but went with Moon instead as its less common and when I played with the way Luna flowed with the first name I chose I hated it but Moon gave it that celestial touch and flowed so nicely and was not so used as Luna.

You can check the social security website and it will tell you popular names (how many were born) by year and location. I really liked the name Eleanor but it is as popular as Ryan was in 1990 in my homestate and I knew so many Ryans!! I wanted something a little less popular for my daughter but not obscure. I'm not exactly sure but how I take it is its te he 50th most popular name like 1 in 50 are named that. I'm sure it's not that exact though. I stay away from popular names though.

I know a few people who have named their daughters Luna in the past few years. But if you guys really love it, go with it. We are thinking about the name Liam for a boy and know how popular it is right now..but still might go for it because I can see myself calling my son that name. :) do what feels right.

There was a whole thread on her of babies names Luna. It’s super popular but hey if we have a girl her name will be Emily so I can’t really judge. I didn’t know until I looked at the top 100 that it was popular lol

I know several Luna’s. But I still like the name. I mean my name is Ellie and when I was growing up it was super popular for dogs and cats, but hey, I still liked it.
