Is it true that prenatals are more for you than baby?

I read that baby will take what they need from you and prenatals are more for the mother - to like recharge what the baby is taking.

To some degree that’s true, but I think there’s more of a concern that if you don’t have enough for baby to take, especially folate. My OB’s office also made sure I was taking one with DHA for baby’s brain development (the best food source of DHA is fish oil, so if you don’t eat a lot of fish you probably don’t have the stores of that- less of a big deal for you, but something recommended for baby).

In the beginning, folic acid is definitely for baby. Most people don't get much in their diet and it's essential for proper neural tube growth, which happens in the first few weeks after conception. After that it's mostly for mom. Baby will take what he or she needs from mom, and mom will become vitamin deficient far before baby does. It does make sure you have enough vitamins for baby but also for you. Babies are thiefs!

It's for both. Prenatals help prevent with some birth defects, but also gives mom nutrients she needs / could be lacking.
