Overreacting?

So my boyfriend told me about his exes, and there's one specific girl who he said was a mere crush and NOTHING more who he still talked to and would even make plans to meet her when we were suppose to have the day together. then i found messages from a year ago saying he loves her and what not, i can understand that he loved her if he was honest but why did he just say it was a mere crush when he clearly loved her?
