Should you give your baby vitamin D when breastfeeding?

I take 5000 iu every day per doctors orders. Is that enough to get through my milk?

I was confused on this. They say breast milk has everything your baby needs then why do you need to give them vitamin D drops??? Im just wondering this is my first breast feed baby and she is 12 weeks

From what I’ve learned you need to take 6400 iu for there to be enough in your breastmilk to be sufficient. I take a 5000 supplement and my prenatal which I take daily still has 1400.

Yes, opinions vary on this but plenty gets through into your milk if you’re taking a substantial supplement

I took vitamin D while breastfeeding and was still told by my pediatrician to give my child a vitamin D drop. Not quite enough makes it through your milk.
If your Pediatrician has recommended it, even knowing that you're taking it, then listen to your Pediatrician. 💕

My doc here in Canada said everything except vitamin D gets through to baby in breast milk. (A tiny bit does but not enough.) and that everyone, adults included, should be taking D this far north cuz we just don’t get enough sun.

AAP stance is to give drops, however the AAP also published a paper showing that maternal dosing of 6400iui/day had the same infant outcomes on vitamin D as dosing the infant with 400iui/day.

I was EBF, I got told after 4 months when LO started puree food to introduce vitamin D. Before that they didnt need it. I'm in UK. I think it just depends on where your from and different rules. 🤷‍♀️

Yes. The vitamin D is for you, the drops are for baby. Most adults are deficient in vitamin d so you need that for yourself. Not enough passes through the breastmilk which is why they need the extra.

Ask your pediatrician. Mine said I don’t need to unless I wanted to but he told me it’s not necessary. So I didn’t give them.
