Advocating at the DR office, when to see fertility specialist

Amanda

I’m looking for advice about advocating for yourself at the doctor’s office, and when to seek a second opinion.

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for six months, and I recently had an annual visit with my OB/GYN. I brought up concerns about my cycle: based on OPK strips and charting, I’m regularly ovulating on CD 21, but getting my period 8-9 days later. I’m concerned about ovulating late and having a short luteal phase.

It felt like she wrote off my concerns, and immediately went into a talk about how fertility charting isn’t great for someone with anxiety, told me to stop charting immediately, and then said I need to lose weight to increase my fertility and avoid high-risk territory.

I’m wondering when is too early to seek advice from a fertility clinic? And should I buy into the idea that weight is my issue? I’m 29, and I know you’re *supposed* to try for a year before assuming a fertility issue. What if I don’t want to wait six more months, and would rather have peace of mind? But I also don’t want to bypass the OB I’d like to use by going around her to a fertility specialist - or maybe she wouldn’t care at all?
