How to tell if it’s infected?

Hi ladies, 2 days ago I had a tattoo extended, and the pain now is worse than the actual appointment. My foot is so swollen I feel like my skin is going to split open every time I take a step. I just took a cool shower and the water touching it made me scream. The first time round wasn’t like this. It didn’t hurt nearly as much. Could it be infected?

It’s not really red. Just very swollen and sore. It wept a bit but I think it has stopped now

It’s fine. I’m a tattooist. It’s healing and done well. Don’t wear closed shoes or socks on it. Feet wrists and hand just swell more than anywhere else

I’m posting an update a week after I got it done to clarify some things. The hot climate cooled down again and the swelling immediately went down. It’s not weeping at all, and isn’t painful anymore. It’s now healing just like the original and all of my others did. I don’t think it’s infected myself. I’ve been caring for it as I should and as I have in the past and it seems fine to me. Personally I’m not an artist and I had all my previous work done by a different guy, so I can’t comment on whether I think it was done well or not. When it fully heals I’ll be able to say if it’s scarred or if the ink is compromised. Thank you for all of the responses, you have all been helpful 😊

It looks like they pressed down too hard while tattooing. Keep an eye on it, I don’t see any signs of infection.

So all the scabs are gone now and everything seems fine to me. I don’t think much ink fell out, if any 😊

How's it feeling now? It honestly doesn't look infected at all. Foot tattoos are hard to heal, and white ink always looks funky. If there are red streaks, white pus oozing (not clear as plasma leaks from most tattoos) a smell to the area or extreme pain, those are signs of infection. A small area of redness is normal around most tattoos as well, mine swell because I am allergic to nickel and  most inks have nickel in them. Sometimes letting it dry out can help with the oozing and swelling. I've never seen an infected tattoo but I've seen some pretty shitty reactions to inks, and soaps and lotions!

Mine did the same exact thing when I got my foot done. Hurt so bad I couldn’t even walk. It was a mix of the location and my body had a reaction to the color.

That tattoo is infected and whoever did it went to deep. I showed it to my husband who’s tattooed dozens of feet. He said most of the ink will most likely fall out.

At the tip of it, it is normal to ser ink raised the way it is, theres a difference though between normal and them going way too deep, you’ll be able to tell if he went too deep. It would look like a trench and it’d be black from the ink. Just don’t pick the scabs , and it should be fine
