How to educate your boyfriend on sex

Can some one please help me with how to educate my innocent/shy boyfriend on things such as erections?

The other week erections some how came up in the conversation my friends were having, when he informed me that he had no idea what an erection was. He is 17 and I just don’t know how to explain these things without it getting awkward or him getting embarrassed.

Any suggestions?
