Large nipple problems

My nipples are pretty big, length wise, and I've seen numerous lactation consultants. One said they were 'perfect breastfeeding nipples' & another said breastfeeding might not be for me because it will always be painful, since it's too much for my baby to take in. My son has a shallow latch no matter what I do..no lip or tongue tie..and the consultant I recently saw said it was normal for my nipple to be compressed after feedings?! That doesn't sound normal..if my nipple is compressed, that means it's not getting to his soft palate, right? She said it was ok since his latch looked correct at the time. I just don't know what to do anymore I really want to breastfeed..this is so discouraging.
