NuvaRing and irregular periods

I have been having irregular periods... i mean 6 months apart or every other week irregular since I started my period back in the 5th grade. I’m now 21. I have seen my doctor about this issue before and he started me on the pill. I wasn’t diligent enough to take the pill everyday which I knew could only make my periods worse. so i wanted to switch. I’m on the nuvaring now and I’m happy with it so far but has anyone else had the same issue with irregular periods like that? My doctor says there could be fertility issues in the future so I wanna make sure I’m taking good precautions
