Normal? Or something wrong?

Question

My son is 23 months old, and does the following:
- Throws tantrums left, right and centre. 
- Touches things he knows he’s not supposed to (goes from one thing to another), and keeps at it ALL DAY!
- Looks at me and grins when he’s about to touch something he’s not allowed to.
- Doesn’t care about getting a smack. Laughs it off and does wrong again. 
- when I say no, he doesn’t listen.
- ignores me when I say his name.
- Chews food, spits it out or throws it.
- Drinks water then spits it all over the floor. 
He does naughty things ALL DAY EVERYDAY! He goes to the sink and pulls down knives and spoons and whatnot; then runs and tries to get into things; then throws things. Just one thing to another constantly. Is this normal? Or what?!

He is pushing his limits, you need to find a punishment that fits with him, and be consistent. My kids hated time out. I never did the whole sitting in the corner. I put them in there bed. If they went in there alot. I made them take a nap. I would not reward bad behavior with my attention. Thats what kids want good or bad. I just got them picked them up and put them in bed. Told them why they were there. You cant let them see that your upset.

Sounds like you just need to find the type of punishments that work for his learning style. He could also be bored then when it goes for too long it just becomes naughty. Now there is also the chance that he has oppositional defiance disorder which can come out very young. But usually they vent through some kind of trauma. And then again some kids are just naughtt

It sounds pretty normal. I found at that age you just have to be really consistent. If my daughter touched something that she wasn’t supposed to or something like that I would just firmly say “no, you can’t touch that because it’s breakable” or whatever the reason is and remove her. Sometimes she’d have a temper tantrum but after a few times she would understand. I only did that consistently with everything for a couple weeks and she learned really fast that mom was just going to move her away so it was pointless. I never had to yell at her or smack her. Its just about being consistent. I also used the 3 R’s technique that Cathy Glass teaches in her book “Happy Kids” and it seemed to work really well. Basically the 3 R’s technique is just request, repeat and reaffirm. So you first request your child to do something and give them a reason as to why you are requesting it. “Tom, don’t throw the toy. It could break or hurt someone.” If they still don’t listen then you repeat and request more firmly, this time letting your child know what will happen if they don’t listen. “Tom, don’t throw the toy. It could hurt someone. If you don’t stop throwing the toy I will have to put it up for the day until you can play with it nicely.” Lastly, if the child still doesn’t listen or continues the bad behaviour you reaffirm by following through with the consequence you told them would happen. “Tom, you threw your toy again after I asked you not to, I am putting it away for the day. You can try again tomorrow.” You can literally use this technique with any scenario for toddlers and it works because eventually your child comes to know that they might as well do what you ask the first time because if they don’t there will be a consequence and you will follow through with that consequence, but again the key is following through. If you request they do something and tell them there will be a consequence if they don’t listen and then you don’t follow through they will listen less the next time because they’ll know you don’t mean what you say. Ya that's normal. Terrible twos. I found my son really misbehaved right before 2 and a few months after but be consistent and don't give in and it'll start to get better.

Normal, but still frustrating. Like the other posters suggested, you need to figure out a punishment that gets through to your child. You give one simple warning then when he does the bad thing again he gets immediate, consistent punishment. No threats, just follow through on your part. I also try to praise good behavior and thank him for listening and being a good boy.
