I call all of my kids by their full name. One of my son's names can easily be made into a nickname, but I correct people who call him that. 
The exception is if your preferred name is juvenile and don't age well. It may be cute for a baby, but not necessarily an adult professional. Like the same Sammy.....cute, but I think the formal name of Samuel or Samantha would be advisable so he or she can use that name as an adult if preferred.

I definitely think you need to consider them when naming your baby. I knew someone that named their baby Samuel but hated the nick name Sam. She constantly was telling people, “It’s Samuel, not Sam.” Once he started school everyone started calling him Sam anyway and he now prefers to go by Sam as an adult- she is the only person that calls him Samuel. I just think if you hate the most common nick name for a name so much you’re probably better of choosing another name.

I'm not a fan of nicknames. My husband loves them 🙄. We're compromising with using a name that can be easily shortened but I like when it's long.

I love the name Samantha but the only thing that might stop be using it is I KNOW people are going to want to call her Sam or Sammy.  Not having that, her name is Samantha.

I’m not huge fan of nicknames, the only nicknames we use is my daughter is Aurora but we call her Rory, and we call Tess, Tessa or Tessie, everyone else goes by their full names
