Naming children rant.

Ra

I don't need explanations and I'm not looking to start a fight but, I feel I need to get this off my chest before I go crazy with pregnancy rage. I honestly don't understand the stigma behind naming children. Women always ask others opinions and worry about possible repercussions. Spelling or pronunciation I understand but, I have never picked a name haphazardly in my life. I find out the meaning and how the name flows. If you love it and it's special to you, who cares? The main argument is that kids will make fun of them. Ok.

1. Kids will make fun of anything and any name if they want to because they're kids and don't know how to handle their emotions. My husband had his name made fun of... It's JOEY. One of the most common names ever! Yep. Called "Sloppy Joe"

2. A kid lives with the possibility of being chastised for their name for approximately 12 years of their entire life. I was made fun of from Kindergarten to 5th grade for my first name (Rainee, like the weather. Kids said that I controlled the weather and that I was making it rain during recess and corner me and yell at me until I cried) and 6th to 12th for my last (Head. The classic was, "what's your middle name? Gives?). Everyone loved my first name from middle school on. Now, I even love my name.

3. I would be more worried about my child not being able to stick up for themselves with any altercation or tell an authority figure about a problem. If they don't learn that early, they won't be able to handle real problems in the future or know that they know that they are better than what a bully says.

4. Lastly, with how dramatic the anti-bullying campaigns are today. No kids are going to be able to say anything negative without being punished within 5 minutes and a meeting being held that afternoon. Plus, the kid being bullied will be swept away to a safe room and given candy and a stuffed animal for a week. (Ok maybe that was dramatic but it seems like that is where this is headed...)

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this way. Maybe not. Regardless, I'm going to name my kids one of the following depending on what I believe their personality best fits and I don't care what reservations my family, friends, or the internet has about them. My husband and I took 11 years to pick them and we love them and their meanings.

- Quentin Patrick: Noble Son

- Perseus (Percy) Alexander:

Destroyer and Defender of Men

- Evelyn Willow: Graceful Giver

- Cosima Sage:

Wise One of the Universe

Ok... Rant over. Have a great night and pregnancy/motherhood.
