My TransvagUltra, SHG, HSG,& Hysteroscopy Experience
Transvaginal Ultrasound is done usually around CD 2-7, to determine egg quantity (Antral Follicle Count), uterine anatomy and possible abnormalities. It's a 6-7inch thing with a condom around it. You're in the position as if you're getting a pap done. It's painless and kind of cool if you're able to see the screen. Your dr can let you know what they see right there.
HSG aka Hysterosalpingogram and SHG aka Sonohysterogram are done around CD 6-10. I'm grouping these together because the process is similar, they are just looking at different either the fallopian tubes or uterus. Once you're nice and spread eagle a catheter will be inserted into your uterus and will be opened by a balloon type thing, the liquid will enter your body and show the dr what is going on. This is uncomfortable, it's pinching and cramping. Breathe in deep breaths and slowly exhale. Keep focused on this. It'll be over soon and the results are worth it. The HSG will by dye and will be shown by a real time x-ray of your fallopian tubes. The SHG shows the uterine cavity on a sonogram machine screen. The dr will then take everything out. Don't be alarmed if you begin cramping again and feel a gush of liquid. You'll experience a little bleeding and possibly cramping.
Hysteroscopy is done around CD 6-10. This is a camera in your uterine cavity and if there's any growths or things to cause alarm they can remove it during the procedure. If there's growths between the endometrial cavity it can cause your body to think it's pregnant and once a egg reaches the uterus to implant the body will reject it believing it's already pregnant due to the abnormalities. The good thing about this process is you'll be unconscious. The morning of, my husband drove, i filled out paperwork, peed into a cup, and they took me to the operation room. I had been hooked up to an IV drip, got anti nausea, painkiller, and antibiotics going the previous hour before the procedure. So, I slide from one bed to the other, they put my legs in stirrups and velcro them in place, my arms on a cross type resting area, give me gas, and put a warm weighted surgical sterile thing on me that had the opening around my genitals for the procedure. The anesthesiologist was doing her thing, we were all laughing and chatting and then i was out. The procedure was maybe 20 minutes. I woke up in the operating room once the procedure was done and the anesthesiologist was giving me post-op meds. I asked them how everything went and they were all shocked i was awake and alert so soon. They told me everything went great and to keep laying down as i was wheeled into recovery. I honestly felt itchy, but very well rested. LOL. The dr and nurses were checking in on me and all surprised my body skipped over the expected recovery period. I was released when my vitals looked good and my husband picked me up. That night I had bleeding and cramps. I'm currently on day 1 post procedure and so glad I don't have to go anywhere today. Cramping, bleeding, lightheaded, dizzy and I'm having to eat high protein snacks due to shakes. All-in-all, I'm just taking it easy. Last night was hard, but today is much better, but im very relieved to be home today. I'm the type with high pain tolerance and don't like asking for help, so from me to you-take it easy. LOL
Also, if you're in Nevada, Red Rock Fertility is fantastic and has been a wonderful experience so far. Best of luck everyone!
