Any ideas on how I can start a cake business?

I absolutely love cooking. I’m a very creative/artistic person. I can draw very well, and I’m a new mama! I thought this would be the perfect career for me (or just something to do on the side to earn extra income!) 
My question is, how can I start? Any ideas?

Check into food sales laws in your state first. My BIL wanted to start a business involving food, and you have to take food safety courses, get licensed, and work out of a commercial kitchen for certain foods (can't remember the exact details) so look into that first to avoid potential lawsuits and fines.

A business like that does really well from referrals. Try to get a few friends to get cakes/cupcakes from you. Start an instagram for your business! Also, I agree with the other poster about posting business cards.

Like someone else said, check into the laws regarding food businesses. Some states allow you to easily start a food business in your home, others like mine (Pa) have very strict guidelines to have a home based food business. You can always rent a commercial kitchen for few hours/days a week. Churches that have meal events have to have their kitchens inspected by the health dept and they will often rent them to people at very reasonable rates. 
Start small too. Only take one or two jobs a week so you aren’t overwhelmed and work your way up from there. It will also help you manage your costs until you have the business to buy ingredients in bulk. Test out recipes on friends and family and develop a few signature flavor combinations. Take some of your best stuff to gatherings like picnics and other events where other people will be and have business cards on you to hand out. Vistaprint.com gives you a few hundred free business cards on your first order. Just put all the important info (business name and license,phone, social media/website, etc.) on them and you can get fancier ones later. 
If you decide to continue the business after a few months, I highly recommend becoming an LLC to protect yourself and your assets. Also look into what type of insurance you might need.
