Best friend in love?

Last year I moved schools and went into college, me and this guy hit it off we’ve been best friends for almost a year now, about a month or two he said he’s sure that he’s gonna fall in love with me at some point and he said he’ll tell me when it happens. Yesterday he told me, it felt so weird, I told him I don’t feel the same way and nothing will change yet I feel the need to distance myself from him.

Can anyone help with what to do?
