Family pets around newborn?

Question

Am I being unreasonable that I don’t want my parent in laws cat and dog being around my newborn? 
Whenever they come to visit, they bring the dog... they won’t go anywhere without it. The dog has a nice temperament but I find that he always smells of a wet dog. Whenever we go to their house, i always come home covered in cat hairs and feel like I need to wash my clothes ugh! Sorry if that bit sounds petty lol. 
I just don’t feel comfortable with them bringing the dog into my home when they visit once baby is here, or taking baby to their house in the early days.
Partner isn’t really discussing with me, think I’ve offended him..  I’m just not a dog and cat person and would rather keep my baby away from them. Any suggestions to avoid offending anyone?

To offer an alternative perspective, it’s actually really good for kids to be around dogs because it builds their immune system in a healthy way. That is less true for cats. Either way, I think it’s fair that when baby is a newborn you’d want to not have the dog around, but once baby is a little older, it would actually benefit them to be around a dog!

I wouldnt want my new born around any pets either. Its still an animal and they still carry germs. Doctors dont recommend having the baby out in large groups of people, let alone animals. 
Its your home, your baby and you have the right to choose what you feel is safest for your baby.

I've got a cat and have no issue with him being around my son once he's born.
As long as pets are supervised at all times there shouldn't be any danger. 
You've just got to do what you're comfortable with

Lol I live on a farm with 11 dogs in total (8 of which live in kennels) so not having my baby around pets is not an option! And I personally can’t wait for my little one to have a best friend and to grow up around a dog (they’re only small Jack Russell’s)! Im very much a believer that if you shelter your baby/child too much they will end up worse off! But that’s just my opinion😊

It’s not unreasonable at all, especially if you’re a pet-less household. I have 1 dog but we actually have rule (shame on me 🙃) we’ve spent a lot of effort, time and money into training her and if someone’s dog isn’t just as well behaved then they aren’t allowed over. Our family hates it but 🤷🏼‍♀️

Heck no you’re not wrong. It’s your house and your newborn. If they desperately can’t leave their home without their dog I’d say they can bring it but it has to stay outside

I don’t think it’s unreasonable but I’m not a pet person either. If you are, I think animals around kids are fine supervised, but I surely wouldn’t want added mess or odors in my house with my new baby.

Is it a small dog? Ask them to bring a crate to keep the dog in (or buy one, they are $20-$30) when they are there.  We have a little Yorkie and we sometimes have to bring her to family events but always bring a crate to keep her in so she isn’t roaming or disturbing anyone’s house/personal space.

I’m a huge dog person and I don’t think you’re being unreasonable at all. This is your child and your home, you have every right to ask them not to bring their pets around your baby until you are ready and comfortable with it. Do you boo and don’t feel bad for it!!
