Majoring in elementary education but I have an extreme fear of school shootings?!

Question

So I am an elementary education major. This is something I have wanted to do since I was young. I have always wanted to teach and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.. the problem is I have an extreme fear of school shootings. I live in the US and it seems there are always shootings going on at large places with a lot of people (often times schools) 
How can I get over this fear? I even have had nightmares about it. I don’t want it to stop me from doing something I have always wanted to do 😔 Is this something I will grow out of? I’m only 21. Anyone here who has the same fear and how do you handle it? Thanks

You could always move to Canada. 🤷🏻‍♀️ teachers also make way more money here, my mom is a kindergarten teacher and makes like $80k

I’m a vice principal and I worry about this daily. Something that helps me cope is having clear plans for what I would do if it happened.

Prepare yourself so you are not a victim. You have a victim mind-set.. work to change it so that you have a protective mind-set. 
Those children are your responsibility for roughly 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. If you choose to be a sitting duck while something bad is happening, you won't survive. Train yourself to be a fighter. Not only will you be setting a good example for your children but you'll also gain self confidence. 
Take classes on self defense. Look into schools for ALICE training -- teaches fighting back in an active threat scenario. Don't let the possibility of something bad happening prevent you from chasing your dreams. Bad things happen, but you don't have to let them control your life.

I think that it's a fear that you will have forever in the school industry unfortunately. I am sorry that you are finding it to be so intense. I wouldn't quit, maybe try to find someone to talk to about it. You can also take some classes/trainings on how to deal with active shooter situation. It's not really a solution to your fear but it might help?

Lockdown’s. I just pray it’s not our school next and I’m super kind to parents   I work in Elementary though
