Adopting a cat, what to expect?!

Hello ladies, my fiancé and I have decided that we want to adopt a cat. Both of us have only been dog owners so I’m not sure exactly what to expect. We plan on adopting an older cat from an animal shelter (kittens get adopted so easily and I want the older cat to have a happy home too).

We haven’t yet but will be getting a litter box, a cat carrier, food/ water bowls, toys, a bed, a scratching post and maybe a cat house but we have to see if we can find room as our house is small lol. Is there anything else I should get?

Also what to expect when we bring kitty home? We haven’t picked a cat yet as we want to buy all items for it first, but I’m expecting the cat to be skittish and probably hide under a bed or something similar for a little but anything else I should prepare for?
