Should I be brushing my 12 month olds teeth?

If so, how often? How long? Can I use just water? I’ve been trying to brush his teeth since  he got teeth but he doesn’t let me so I just give up...

The only thing worse than  not enjoying trying to get your kids to brush is having to go through your kids getting fillings and crowns. We brushed our daughters teeth with water to get her used to it then switched to fluoride free toothpaste. She is 21 months and I’m still using fluoride free which our pediatrician recommended until she understands to spit. They say to now use toothpaste with fluoride. The amount the size of a grain of rice. I usually give my son (14 months old) a toothbrush with toothpaste 2-3 times per day when I’m changing his bum. He chews on it pretty good and I usually take a quick turn and brush top and bottom.
