My special effects make up never looks real enough, any tips?

I think you need to go messier, everything around it looks too perfect, do some bad bruising/stipple the blood etc.

Look at pictures of real abrasions and wounds. There is a lot of underlying blues, purples and reds. Greens, yellows and browns with infections and sores. 
Play with textures too — making a wound look “wet” with clear lip gloss if you don’t have fake blood.
