If I get this will it be a problem that the bassinet section cannot convert to take up the whole size of the playpen? Or will the part be large enough for the first few months until he is big enough to move to his crib?

If he outgrows the top bassinet part before you are ready to move him to his crib, you can always take the top part off and put him in the main area lower level.

If you plan to use it everyday or for next to your bed I definitely think that small top peice would be a problem. 
Babies can essentially be in the top part until they can sit themselves up or pull up. My LO is 5 mos and still in the top part. He definitely takes up the entire space.  I think he would have outgrown that one by 8 weeks or so.

Once the can pull themselves up y’all have to use the bottom part anyways so I think it shouldn’t be a problem only problem for me is the price
