How do you guys feel about YouTube’s new rules involving children
So Youtube got a fat lawsuit of 170 Million dollars because of the Children Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). They use cookies to gain information on what you’re watching and searching up, this is so they can give you ads and video suggestions suiting what you might be interested in. For example if you watch a lot of beauty videos, they may give you more ads for makeup.
The COPPA protects you cannot collect information on a minor (aged under 13) without parental permission. Since YouTube does this automatically without agreement this it infringes on the law. I would like to point out in order to have a YouTube account you’re supposed to be 13, AND YouTube Kids is made for those under 13 to watch with Parental Permission.
Now YouTube is making new rules to fix this issue.
They are getting rid of personalized ads on content that would be considered “children’s content.”
They are getting rid of likes and notifications on “children’s content.”
Creators have to verify if they have a channel directed towards kids.
BUT YouTube will be using its artificial intelligence to decide what videos are targeted towards kids. Certain features of this is looking for toys, children’s character’s, and games.
People are arguing all the channels directed towards kids be moved to YouTube’s kids from the general website.
Some concern creators have shown is that an artificial intelligence might flag their video if it appears to be “too cartoony looking” like if they are an animator or artist. Some people will be losing ad revenue because of the flagging, and without likes and notifications their views will go down which determines how much they get paid. Also there is room for error that a video could be inappropriate but deemed child friendly because it features a character or a toy.
