What's best for cats while we are away?

My husband, the kids and I are going to be away for two weeks visiting his ill mother. While we are away my mother has offered to the watch our cats, they are 1.5 and 2 years old. My parents used to have a cat but he passed last year, so they currently have no other pets. My mom says she can either come over and cat sit or we can bring the cats over to her place. If she comes over, she says she will try to come everyday but she or dad will definitely come every other day. Has anyone had experience with this? Would the cats be happier in a foreign place but with more attention or in a familiar place with way less attention?
