Do you tell your kids to only worry about themselves or?

I took out my sister in laws kids today to a kids play area in our town. We were waiting to go out the door since a lot people were coming in and  a girl held the door open for everybody while she waited for her mom to get out of the car. We said thank you and walked out. Her mother who then got out of the car  tells her in an annoyed voice “Go inside! don’t hold the door for anybody.  You only worry about yourself.”  My sister in laws kids heard that and were shocked.  I had to reassure them holding the door for people is a kind thing to do.  
I thought that was good manners 🤷🏻‍♀️ I teach my nieces and nephews to do kinds things like that. What do you guys think ? Do you teach your kids to do little things like that or do you teach them to only worry about themselves ?

In some instances, I tell my kids to only worry about themselves.
This would not be one of those.

I will teach my daughter to have manners and to hold the door open for people. I was taught these things and always hold the door open for people. I find it crazy when people aren’t taught those things.

Not many people have manners anymore. My kids say please and thank you, hold doors and say excuse me. Oh how it drives me insane when people don't say excuse me and then stand there like you're the problem. I'm definitely passive aggressive and usually say oh excuse me 😈. I've had people bump into me and not say anything, so I will say it then too. I always tell my daughter to use her words and say excuse me, especially if someone is being rude and that usually gets the point across. The only time I ever say to worry about yourself is when they are trying to tattle on someone.

Kindness is a gift and sometimes a simple act of kindness might be something some really needs that day. I am teaching my daughter to be a kind, respectful person. Even at school, the first in line holds the door for everyone else and they alternate each time they leave or return to classroom. It's just common courtesy. You know what else is common courtesy? Grabbing the door after a few people, especially ially if it's a child. I wouldn't let my child hold the door for 20 people going in amd out of a play place either because that's really rude too.😂😂😂 So if it was a lot of people, I can understand where her mom was coming from. If it was just a few, then yeah, she was just being a grumpy turd.

Yes, my kids have manners!. Just like bulling I teach my kids to stand up for themselves and others, say bless you when someone sneezes, say excuse me when passing someone in stead of rudely squeezing bye and others things too. That lady sounded like a cunt😒

I think some people shouldn’t be parenting. Of course holding the door for someone is kind and shouldn’t be taken out of context like: only worry about yourself. I agree with just worrying about yourself and not get into other people’s dramas and sacrifice yourself for them but always to be kind if that’s not causing you any harm. Being nice and serving to others is a good trait to reassure, that poor child will need a lot of work when she grows up after having a mother who’s passing onto her, her own unhealed traumas

I can understand teaching “only worry about yourself” in a instance where other kids are misbehaving or doing something questionable but opening the door is a display of manners and human decency! This momma was clearly in a bad mood or something and using “worry about yourself” in the wrong circumstance.

Holding the door for someone is a nice thing to do. It takes literally 2 seconds of your time. I always try my best to do nice things like that for other people. If I ever have kids, I will teach them the same.
