Family member says measles vaccine caused HFMD?
My LO was fussy and had some small spots show up around her mouth.. I didn’t think much of it. I thought it was just a rash from drooling. Next day she got her flu shot and measles vaccine. Next two days she had a low fever of 101. Then next thing you know she had sores all over her hands, feet, knees, groin area. Refused to eat and was waking up screaming and crying in pain. Went to the pediatrician and confirmed it was HFMD.
I remember my cousin’s LO had HFMD when he was younger so I asked her what she did to make him comfortable. Ugh... big mistake because she went off. She is highly anti-vaccines. She said the reason my LO got hfmd was because she got the measles shot. She argued that it causes it. Our pediatrician said the shot can cause a rash to appear a week later but that it does not cause HFMD. It is it’s own strain of a virus.
I told her this and she continued to argue that vaccines cause it and that I shouldn’t have given her any. First off, that is my decision for my child. I respect that she makes her own decisions for her child even though I don’t agree! I don’t tell her what to do. I asked her “how did your child get HFMD if they didn’t get vaccines?” No solid answer. I said “how did she get it from the vaccine if the red spots started before she even got it?” No solid answer.
Also, we are traveling to Europe where there are many outbreaks of the measles. Why on earth would I not get her vaccinated and risk her getting the measles while traveling??
I just needed to vent because I’m honestly so annoyed that she felt the need to blame me for giving my daughter HFMD because I choose to get her vaccinated? 🤦🏼♀️ so god damn annoying.
Side note:
My daughter is on day 6 of hfmd... she’s starting to show normal behavior and activity and eating a bit more. If your child had this before, how long did it take until they were 100% better?
