How much formula does your 3 month old eat?

My LO is 3 months old, but only eating about 24 oz a day. The Dr said 30oz a day by 3 months and 40 oz a day by 4 months. I know my LO is a bit smaller than most babies at this age, but I need some reassurance here.

My Dr recommended that our baby eat about 2.5/3 oz of formula per pound in general. My 3 month old is 17 lbs and very tall as well, and he drinks about 7 5-6 oz bottles a day, maybe 6 bottles if he sleeps long enough. So in total between 35-42 oz a day to keep up with his caloric needs.

I think I’ve read that even if a baby keeps growing, they’ll still max out around 32 oz per day. So I’m not sure why he says they’ll increase to 40 oz at 4 months
