Cancelling flight

So my bf is an ass and made plans to spend the holidays with me then decided to change plans and spend it with his family. What makes him an ass is the fact that we changed to me just coming for New Years then after I paid a non refundable fee to get the ticket changed he tells me that he can no longer do New Years and that I should just cancel the flight. Do they normally do full refund or would it just be best to plan a trip to go somewhere else?
