Retainer making me gag

I got my braces off October 1st, I have the clear/plastic retainer and the metal retainer.

Both of them make me GAG. I had my metal one trimmed as far as it could be so it was not so much on the roof of my mouth. All my ortho says is I have to wear to and there’s nothing they can do for gagging. So I need tips and/or tricks to help me wear atleast the metal one through the day.

I’ve been switching from plastic and metal at night time but he said I need to wear one or the other all day. But I can’t if I keep gagging.
