Is shutting a child's door when its bedtime bad?

My daughter is 2 and a half and can't work a round door handle yet, so my husband and I had always kissed her goodnight and shut the door. She would sometimes cry for 10 minutes, but that was about it. My dad just told me last week that we're going to give her clostraphia doing that.. is that true? We've started laying with her until she falls asleep now, but it takes 2-3 hours sometimes and it makes it so my husband and I dont get any alone time together in the evenings.
