Do you turn the heat off when you leave the house?

Just curious honestly what do y’all do and what is your reasoning, and are there exceptions? When it gets to be lower than 50 degrees outside I generally will leave the heat running but I’ll turn it down to 60 or something. I don’t want our kitties to freeze plus I hate walking into a cold house. And I’m wondering if turning it off and allowing it to drop all day and then turning back on again (so that it would have to heat itself from 30 back up to 70...) would even be a worse use of energy than just maintaining a steady 60 all day...
But I don’t know what I’m doing folks, what’s normal?? 😂

I think it's more effective to maintain a low heat than turning it off and on.
For the last 5 years we were turning it off while at work and only having it on when we got home. But last year our daughter was born so we had the heating on all the time and it actually cost us less.

We have 2 cats and 2 dogs so I turn it down but not to cold. When I didnt have pets and I was living alone I turned it off.

I'm in Ohio it's currently 17 degrees today and we have 5.5 inches of snow outside. We still have not turned our heat on. Our house still at 73, without it. We dont typically turn the heat on until its 40 or below outside as our house holds heat very well. We dont keep it on more than a few hours. It's off at night and when we leave.

I turn it off. However I live in southern california so it doesnt get super cold. The way it works in commercial buildings, the way I understand it, is that once temperatures reach a set unoccupied minimum, the heat turns on so that the temperature inside the building never goes below a certain temp even though its unoccupied. Similar thing with hot temperatures and the AC. Buildings also have a warm-up period before expected occupancy so that the temp inside the building is already at the right temp when people are expected to be in. So it really isnt crazy to at least set it to some minimum temperature in cold climates. It's probably better to set it a little lower if you dont have an automatic system though.

Where I live it gets to cold in the winter. If we turned the heat off when we left the house our pipes would freeze and most likely burst.  Water all over doesn’t sound fun to me.  Today is at a high of 25 degrees Fahrenheit.  And you don’t want your house going below 50 ish. And it be worse for your furnace (Energy) having time badly the temp back up. Letting it go to 60 than back up to 70 is okay. ￼￼￼￼￼

It’s about -20°c out right now. If we turned it off it would get way too cold inside!  We have a thermostate that we program to be cooler during the day and at night though. 
However, the summer we will often make sure our a/c is turned off when going away for a weekend (it still get hot here... about 30 but with the blinds all closed it won’t be too hot inside when we get home).

Our main heat comes from a wood burning oven... So days where I know it will be cold I maintain a fire to keep things warm, if I know I'll go out most of the day I just dress a bit more and warm up the house as little as possible. Luckily we have an really old house, built to keep warm do unless it's -10c or colder outdoors it doesn't get too cold indoors.
