Do you believe educational neglect warrants a phone call to Child Protective Services?

Question

The title pretty much says it all... to me educational neglect can be a number of things... 1) refusing testing/services for a child who continues to fail despite trying their best...2) failing to get your child to school on time (or picking them up early EVERY day OR forgetting or refusing to come get them for hours after dismissal time)...3) only bringing your child to school once every 10 days so they are technically enrolled... there are so many other instances... but to you, what warrants making that phone call? Where do you draw the line?

I’d speak to the parent and see what’s going on. If they don’t divulge any positive, helpful information, then yes. A child missing that much school is a problem. If there is a health reason, and they have a doctors note, then nevermind. I’d want to know why they’re refusing testing and what plans they have to help their child succeed.

For me it depends on the reasoning and if the child is learning in other ways while at home. My mom always brought me to school regularly until I went through a really bad bullying experience during 5th and 6th grade by the same group of girls. It made me fall into a horrible depression, she tried meetings with the principal and teacher and nothing helped so seeing me crying everyday not wanting to go after months of encouragement she stopped making me go. She’d still try to encourage it and if I stayed home she’d contact the teacher to have work sent home for me, but my mental health was more important than physically being at school. If it’s just out of laziness with no real reason and the parent is not teaching their child or having them keep up with their school work while at home then I see it as more of an issue.

Yes, all those make sense to me. And many times, if they’re neglecting their educational needs, there might be some other needs they’re neglecting as well. 
When I worked for CPS, the only thing that really came up as “educational neglect” was if they missed too many days from school. After a certain number of absences, the school was required to report it.

Yes I think it does. 
Calling CPS doesn’t mean the child is automatically removed from the home. 
It just means a case worker can visit the home, talk to the family, and offer resources to help the parents make better choices with their kids. If abuse/neglect isn’t really happening then CPS will close the case. It’s no big deal.

Educational neglect is a thing. Typically the school notifies the juvenile justice division duw to truancy which get cps involved. 
Former cps worker.. I had a case with a family where the child was 13 and had never been to school and rarely left his home. His father was disabled and his mother was slow. They were unable to enroll the child in school due to their limitations. The social deprivation the child had stunted him severely. You never know the reasons that child is unable to get to school. Cps is suppose to help families overcome crisis.

I was homeschooled and I completely agree that CPS should be involved. There's so many "homeschool" families that do nothing and their children suffer. What grinds my gears even more about it is a lot of states are trying to push to make homeschooling illegal because of these families, even though each state has regulations and laws on how to homeschool legally. I don't plan on homeschooling at this point, but I want the freedom to choose as parent.

Depends. I don’t think most families who interact with cps feel their experience was helpful or positive, so I think calling cps can simply make life more difficult for the child and their family. Is the child not coming to school because of an emotional issue that makes attending difficult? Are you aware of some kind of issue with the parents being unable to meet this child’s basic needs? Since there are protocols in place for truancy, Calling cps to circumvent them because you feel the truancy officers are not doing their job proficiently might be considered overstepping.

Parents can get sent truancy letters and can be fined if they allow their kid to miss too much school so that’s understandable if they don’t have a legitimate reason for not bringing their kid to school
