I don’t have the option. We rely on my income to maintain our lifestyle, so there’s really no choice. I will go back part time for awhile but outside of that, I must go back to work after my maternity leave.

I love my career so I took off until he was 4 months. I used up all my FMLA but it was over the holidays so Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks extended it by about a month. I’m a teacher. I’m hoping to do the same again if we are able to have a second. We are blessed to have multiple family members who watch him and I teach cyber school so I work 8-4 but they are very laid back about flex time and we are allotted so many work from home days a year.

My original plan was to go back to work full time. My husband’s aunt was gonna watch the baby for us. 2 weeks before I was supposed to go back his aunt decided to start watching 2 other kids (she has 2 kids who weren’t in school yet already), one of which has Down syndrome and doesn’t talk. She was concerned she wouldn’t be able to handle a newborn also so she told me she couldn’t watch my son. I should have known, my husband’s aunt money hungry and these kids parents are lawyers and were paying her more than we could. My paycheck would have covered the cost of child care and then maybe half a bill. So we decided it was best that I stayed home with him. My sweet boy is gonna be 2 in January and I’m due with baby #3 in May!! We also have a 9yr old, soon to be 10yr old!!

I am a SAHM but I am also a full time student. I’m doing online courses this semester and next semester I’ll be going back to class on campus. I have a few more years of school and once I graduate I’ll be going back to work doing what I want to do. My husband wants to get out of law enforcement once I go back to work and possibly go back to school too.

I originally went back part time when my daughter was 3 months old and it was pretty great. I felt it was the best of both worlds at the time because I still got paid well, and had great benefits and some adult time, but still got to see my sweet baby all afternoon everyday. However our nanny was going back to school so we decided to try daycare, which we loved too, at first. Then our daughter got RSV which then developed in pneumonia and was hospitalized for a week. After she was discharged several doctors (including my dad, who is a infectious disease pediatrician) warned us she needed to be removed from all daycare-type settings for at least 6 months to allow her lungs to heal. At that point she was newly one and I decided to stay home with her to put her health first. That was a year ago next Thursday. While my daughter is thriving, I’ve since gotten pregnant with number two (9 days til he arrives) and decided to go back to school to become a pediatric nurse practitioner because our daughter’s nursing staff was so incredibly wonderful last year. That program begins next May, so I’ll continue to be a SAHM for about 18 months total; we’ll likely do a mix of a part time nanny, grandma, and part time ELC for childcare. Sometimes life gets in the way and forces your plans to change, but gives you amazing opportunities in the meantime. Make your plans, but understand they may change with time!
