One or two last names? Please read description!

Question

Okay. We've been going back and forth on this the whole pregnancy, and are still undecided. When we got married, we decided to both take on each other's last names, so each have two last names. But then we procrastinated in the actual name change, and only I changed my name. So currently I have two last names (his and then mine) and he has just one. We're not sure if we want to give the baby one last name (his, our shared last name) or two (he would change his name to add mine, so all three of us would have two last names). I am torn between the simplicity of one last name and the meaning/identity behind including my last name as well. I'd especially love to hear your thoughts if you have two last names! Thanks!

I always wonder how complicated this gets if you have a daughter and she wants to take her spouses last name in the future. Does she then have 3 last names or does she drop one? Idk I’m personally all about simplicity so I vote just one, but ultimately it’s up to you.

I think it depends on how the last names sound. Which one is cooler? Do they sound good together?

I grew up with a hyphenated last name and LOVED it. There was something so special about getting to incorporate both sides of the family into my name. I am not traditional by any means so the idea of taking a man's name just because he is a man seems a bit absurd to me so maybe that is why I appreciated having both names incorporated growing up. Do whatever feels right, but from something who had a hyphenated last name it wasn't too much of a trouble. I also think it would be really special for the three of you to share the same last name ❤️

Whatever you decide it’s by far the easiest if you all have the same last name. So either you change yours to just his or he changes his to both and they baby gets whichever you decide.

Could you use your maiden name as a middle name? It was a family tradition in my moms family that the first born daughter was given the mothers maiden name as a middle name. She didn't carry it on with me though.

I vote one last name. I know some people do two or a hyphen and it’s also a cultural thing as well sometimes. To me two names are confusing. What if two people get married and they both have two last names? What do they have now four last names? Less complicated, one last name.

My personal main priority would be that all have the same last name. So if you feel strongly about keeping your maiden name, so the double last name for all of you; otherwise, all do his last name only.

I think it depends on the names, but I vote 2 last names anyway! My husband and I are going to share each other’s last names when we finally get around to changing them lol

When I got married I hyphenated my last name to add his. I don’t regret doing so, but it is kind of a pain in the arse. 
I’m partial to my maiden name for various reasons that don’t matter to you. 😉 
Now that we’re having a baby we decided to give baby 2 middle names: a ‘first name’ and my last name. Baby gets husbands last name.
