When does baby have a heartbeat?

The cells of a fetal heart start contracting around 5 weeks, however they do not contract in sync making a “heartbeat” until 6 weeks. Even then the contractions can be irregular for up to 8 weeks. According to my med school book.

It really varies. One of my kids didn't have a heartbeat yet  (at least not detectable on the ultrasound) at 6 weeks 4 days, and she was right on time.
