Does cutting out sugar really help with weight loss?

I’m not really a soda drinker more of a sweet tea person. I just had a baby and would like to get back to my pre baby weight. I want to start with something small and work my way up so I’m not so overwhelmed. I think sugar is a good place to start. Cutting out as much from my diet and only drinking water. Can it really make that much of a difference?
