“You have to give respect to earn respect.”

So I have an in law who is a few years younger than me. He is very rude to most people, except maybe his dad and other older men. He will ignore me and talk bad about me behind my back. Ok whatever.

He doesn’t care to show up if something involves me, and if I’m being included in something he acts like it’s wrong.

I know I’m expected to be the bigger person and treat him better. But if I were to not show up for something or ignore him as he does to me, he tells my husband or complains that I’m being rude to him.

Somehow his mother is involved, she sees the situation but her input is that we shouldn’t disrespect someone if they disrespect you. You should be the bigger person and treat them with love and kindness, even if they couldn’t care less about you.

What are your thoughts? Should we respect people who disrespect us? Or give as they give?
