If your baby has tummy issues and you are breastfeeding this may be the problem...
So my son will be 9 weeks old tomorrow. Up until 3 days ago he was quite fussy and gassy, especially after feedings. His stomach was always making noise and his poop was mucousy. I always watch what I eat since I am breastfeeding. We tried probiotics, gripe water, gas drops etc. as recommended by our pediatrician. Nothing really helped. I have also noticed the following:
choking/coughing while nursing, nursing sessions became shorter, I could hear him swallowing rapidly/gulping, he would get fussy at the breast, clamp down on the nipple and pull his head back (ouch!), my breasts felt full often (actually had mastitis once already), my breasts leaked quite a bit and milk sprayed everywhere when just lightly squeezing my nipple.
Well, turns out those are all symptoms for lactose overload. I did some research on the internet and it turns out that block feeding for a few days is the solution for the problem. So now instead of switching breasts during each feeding session I feed him from the same breast for 3 hours and then switch. This change has almost helped immediately and he has been a happy baby since...no gas issues, fussiness, and his poop is starting to look "normal". Also, my milk production went back and my boobs do not feel painfully full anymore.
I wanted to share this because I am sure we are not the only ones going through this. I wish I would have discovered this sooner because it's such an easy fix.
Hope this helps somebody else as much as it helped us.
