Cow Milk Protein Allergy 😢 Need some advise
I have a 1 month old and I have been breastfeeding him since the day he was born. When he was about 4 days old the first visit we took to the pediatrician they told us he was down 10% of his birth weight and we started to supplement him with formula as it was recommended. When he was about 2 weeks old he started having blood in his stool, at that time I was only supplementing him with formula every 2-3 days and only around 1.5oz each time. We took him to his pediatrician who said it might be the formula or a milk protein allergy, which he told me to reduce the amount of dairy I eat and gave me Nutramigen formula in case I needed to supplement but told me to keep breastfeeding. I didn’t need to supplement because luckily I finally had enough milk to feed him. I reduced the amount of dairy I ate and the blood went away in 3 days. Great, I kept my low dairy diet but 2 days later the blood was back. I decided to cut dairy completely then and it has been 5 days that I don’t eat dairy anymore but he hasn’t improved at all. Today we had a fallow up appointment with his pediatrician and they told me to stop breastfeeding and only give him formula now. My heart just shuttled. I can’t breastfeed anymore and I know he is going to miss it too because he looks for my boobs not only for food but also for comfort. They told me to keep pumping and try to reintroduce breastmilk when he is 6 months old... that’s 5 months for now! It makes me wonder if he will even want to latch by then! I was thinking about keeping my dairy-free diet and wait until he is good and try again, but I don’t want to be a bad mom and hurt him again because I’m being selfish. I was just wondering if anyone had the same experience and what are my options. Shouldn’t my body completely get rid of dairy after 2 weeks of being dairy-free? If so, wouldn’t that be the same as the formula? Shouldn’t it be safe then? I truly hope I don’t have to wait 5 months to try to breastfeed him againðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
